The goal of the more than HUF 3 billion development is that the Siklos people can live in a more livable city – says Csaba Nagy, president of the county government.
With the latest development, bicycles will be available from the county seat on Siklós, the bicycle path from Pécs to Pogány, Szőkéd, Szalánta, Áta, Bisse, Kistótfalu, Vokány, Siklós leads to Maria. There are more resting places for bikers on the 35-kilometer stretch. All of this is part of the government’s intention to create a uniform bicycle network in the county, as cycling tourism is gaining momentum.
The Siklós Castle is an attractive tourist destination with its ancient walls, hundreds of years of history, the legend of Captain Tenkes. The most outstanding event is the Siklós Castle Festival, when the Middle Ages, knight tournaments, spectacular parade, dueling, troubadours and battle scenes come to life among the walls. In the framework of the Green City competition, the castle garden would be completely renewed, and at the entrance to Batthyány Street, a semi-open reception center would be opened with shops, a café, and the changing rooms would be equipped with changing rooms and washbasins.
Siklós’ schools play a regional role in both primary and secondary education. Now the two schools have won 840 million forints in the development. At the Kanizsai Dorottya Primary School, this is a new, two-storey building wing and internal transformations of the old building. At Batthyány Kázmér Primary School there is a gym where two physical education classes can be held at the same time. There will be a science room and a ceremony, a foreign language teaching room. Director Gabriella Pataki stressed in connection with the development:
– As a practicing teacher, I think it is important to be able to purchase traditional teaching aids and school furniture that are better adapted to modern educational organization procedures than access to the virtual world.
In 2015, the Imre Catholic Primary School, which focused mainly on the training of disadvantaged pupils, was able to carry out external insulation of the main buildings of the school and exchange of doors and windows from the KEOP tender and diocesan support; In 2017, the school gymnasium was turned into a modern sports facility from government sources. In this and the following years, the Pécs Diocese is planning to renew the school’s sports and indoor spaces in several stages.
– Thanks to the renovations, the students here will be able to overcome their disadvantages with the best results in a modern 21st century building. In addition to renovations, this year we will also buy a new 17-person school bus that will help students in lower-level rural schools go to school, ”said Otto Batki.
The city has won several tourism-related applications, of which the roundabout is especially important with the development of the bicycle path at the Máriagyűd-Siklós junction. The new section joins the Pécs – Siklós cycle path. In the framework of an Interreg project, together with Donji Miholjac, a bicycle path connects the Castle of Siklós with Mailáth Castle in Croatia. In the nearly 300 million forints investment project, the bicycle path between Siklós and Harkány can be renewed and the downtown KRESZ park in Siklós is also renovated.
János Marenics, Mayor of Váralja, considers one of the highlights of the development: – We have to eliminate this part of the city that has been extremely eroded for centuries, which is a serious obstacle to the further development of the spa and the hotel. We have assigned more real estate in the city to provide social housing to the people living here, as most of the current homes do not have bathrooms and restrooms. So we could connect the castle and the bath with a road network and explore the dripstone cave here. We are very hopeful that our Green City and Váralja 2 projects will be green.
Job creation is still the most important area – Csaba Nagy, chairman of the county government, summed up. Anyone who thinks this is possible together with the locals is the one who knows the most about what the city needs. – In addition to tourism and educational developments, an important area of economic opportunities is industrial development. Based on the concept developed together with the locals, we are working together to develop the local business community and seek the opinion of local entrepreneurs. This can greatly contribute to job creation, which is essential for keeping the population in place.

Siklós Castle is shining in its old light

– In addition to the historical heritage, I find it important that the traveler comes to the world of legends literally, since for decades the name of Siklós, Tenkes Hill and the castle has come together with the story of Captain Tenkes. Many of the Siklos people remember when the city was full of life when filming the film, children and adults were statistics, and it was no coincidence that Ferenc Zenthe had become a fellow citizen of Siklós, and a place was named here.
The castle has enormous tourism potential if we are well-versed with this value. The entry into the depository creates a significant marketing opportunity, says Csaba Nagy, chairman of the county assembly.
– Unfortunately, the castle has been pushed down the list of public interest in recent years. We are trying to change this for a year and a half with new services and attention-raising actions, focusing especially on families – says Péter Szentgyörgyváry Castle. – We have created an indoor playground under the name Gameland, with a small king, a knight of Miklós, and a noticeable increase in the number of visitors. There are dozens of museum units that adults can enjoy, but kids have had little program so far. Now, if you like, the young people can get into armor, they can take real swords and helmets. The Game Country is so popular that the majority of families will return here the next day. The Pécs also has this service, and it is also attractive to occasionally ride a rider or ride a car – this is the case, for example, at Easter weekends.
